On December 17, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 4 as the day dedicated to the Braille alphabet, in order to ensure full respect for the rights of visually impaired people.
World Braille Day is marked every year on January 4, the date on which the Frenchman Louis Braille was born in 1809, inventor of the alphabet with raised dots for the visually impaired, still used by the blind today.
